King Saud University has received a US patent for a mechanical heart valve developed by cardiac-sciences professor Dr. Rakan bin Ibrahim Nazer, according to an Arab News report published on 9 October.
Three coordinated leaflets
The design uses three movable leaflets linked to a central mechanism and an outer ring. Their coordinated movement aims to control blood flow and reduce backward leakage.
The invention focuses on leaflet motion and flow dynamics compared with conventional mechanical valve designs.
The announcement concerns a patent. The source does not establish clinical approval, commercial availability or results from patient trials.
