THE STORY

Women at Work · Science and innovation

Maryam Alghannam is an Ibn Rushd Assistant Professor at KAUST, working across Earth Systems Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. She leads the Interface Physics and Poromechanics Lab, studying how fluids interact with faults and fractures beneath the surface.

The work behind the profile

Her path connects reservoir engineering experience with postgraduate study at Berkeley and MIT, followed by the inaugural George Housner postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech. Her research combines theory, simulation and experiments to investigate induced seismicity and enhanced geothermal systems.

Her work places women’s scientific contribution within a demanding technical field. The professional story is one of returning from industry to develop deeper research expertise and applying it to questions at the intersection of energy, mechanics and the environment.
