Lubna Olayan: Balancing Growth and Risk at Saudi Awwal Bank

SAB’s latest disclosures put loan growth alongside higher credit provisions, giving practical context to its chair’s emphasis on selective investment and financial discipline.

For Lubna Olayan, Chair of Saudi Awwal Bank, the latest reporting period brings two responsibilities into view: supporting business expansion and maintaining the financial capacity to manage uncertainty.

The bank’s 21 October 2026 Saudi Exchange disclosure reported nine-month net profit attributable to shareholders of SAR 6.582 billion, up from SAR 6.405 billion a year earlier. Its loans and advances portfolio grew by approximately 11% to SAR 325.2 billion.

Reading growth alongside risk

Those figures sit beside a more demanding quarterly comparison. Third-quarter net profit was SAR 2.165 billion, approximately 7% below the preceding quarter, although slightly higher than a year earlier. Net provisions for expected credit losses and other losses reached SAR 362 million in the quarter, compared with SAR 82 million a year earlier.

SAB attributed the increased charges to specific exposures and revised forward-looking modelling, partly offset by recoveries. The disclosure therefore offers a fuller picture than the headline increase in nine-month earnings alone.

For readers assessing leadership, the useful question is how an organisation explains the relationship between expansion, profitability and emerging pressures. A growing loan book is one measure of activity; the provisions accompanying it are another part of the same account.

A stated approach to capital

In the bank’s separate results statement, also dated 21 October, Olayan emphasised responsible expansion, selective capital allocation and balance-sheet strength. These are the chair’s stated priorities, rather than independent evidence of future performance.

Her current board mandate provides the governance context. SAB’s 29 December 2025 exchange announcement confirmed her appointment as chair following the Saudi Central Bank’s no-objection, for the board term running from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028.

Together, the disclosures frame a concrete leadership challenge: pursuing opportunities while reporting openly on the costs and risks that accompany growth.
