Omar Yaghi: Connecting Molecular Discovery with Opportunities for Young Researchers

The chemist’s international research initiative includes Saudi Arabia in a wider effort to connect scientific expertise, education and practical sustainability challenges.
Omar M. Yaghi’s professional contribution extends beyond the materials he studies to the research connections he is seeking to build.
In a public LinkedIn announcement, Atoco outlined the Yaghi Science Initiative, a planned international network combining discovery, education and opportunities for young researchers. The company’s underlying announcement, dated 2 July 2026, included Saudi Arabia among the countries covered by its initial research appointments.
Connecting research across borders
Atoco, where Yaghi is founder and chief science officer, described the appointments as a first phase toward establishing interconnected research institutes. The initial countries also included the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Italy, the United Arab Emirates and China.
The initiative’s stated purpose is to connect molecular discovery with work on water, energy, environmental challenges and climate resilience. Its announcement identifies students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career scientists among those it aims to support.
These are ambitions for a developing network, rather than evidence that every proposed institute or programme is already operating.
A new academic chapter
Yaghi’s own career also entered a new stage in July. Tsinghua University announced his full-time appointment as a Chair Professor, following an appointment ceremony on 3 July 2026.
The university said he would lead the establishment of its AI Chemistry and Materials Research Institute, bringing together chemistry, materials science and artificial intelligence.
Its biography describes a research career focused on designing and constructing crystalline materials, including metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks. Yaghi earned his chemistry doctorate at the University of Illinois in 1990 and subsequently held positions at several American universities.
A Saudi scientific connection
KACST’s public LinkedIn post celebrating Yaghi’s 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry identified him as an adviser to its president. That connection, alongside Saudi Arabia’s inclusion in the initiative’s July announcement, gives his international work a direct Saudi research context.
His profile brings together scientific specialisation, institution building and the development of opportunities through collaboration.
